Still Alice

This week I read Still Alice by Lisa Genova. It was a tough book to read because it is very personal for me. The story is about a 49 year old Harvard professor, who realizes she has Alzheimer's disease. My grandmother, aunt, uncle and mother-in-law all had or in my uncle's case has Alzheimer's disease. I have seen up close and personal the toll it takes on the individual and the caregivers. At one point in this story, Alice wished for cancer, because she said at least that was a disease she could fight. It is a very depressing subject and this book may not be for everyone, but I think the story was told in a way that gives insight into how a person diagnosed with this disease feels. It might also just cause you to be thankful for each new day and make you spend more time just enjoying it!

New Product for Easter

While looking at some other blogs today, I came across this product that sounds like it will be fun for the little ones at Easter. I can't wait to find some for my favorite boy. The website says they will be available in March at Rite-Aid, Target and Walmart. They are called:

I am already planning my next midnight movie trip.(if they have a midnight showing) I am sure they will considering there were 1000 crazy dedicated fans there the last time! I cannot wait to see this!  Who all will I see at the theater @ midnight THIS time?

Watch This Movie!

I bought my husband the Fireproof movie for our anniversary.   Last night we got to watch it together.   I had heard a lot of publicity about it.   They are calling it "them movie every married couple needs to watch."   It was a great movie!!!   We really enjoyed it.   I, of course, shed alot of tears as I do when I watch many movies.   I think it made us both realize what the other one is feeling in our relationship.   I think my marriage is "fireproof" anyway, but I am really glad we watched this together and I think it will make our marriage even stronger!

The Wednesday Letters

On Monday I read The Wednesday Letters by Jason F. Wright. I did not realize until I finished that I had read another book he wrote called The Christmas Jar.
Who doesn't like to get a letter? In this story a man writes a letter to his wife every Wednesday. I don't want to give away the story, so I'll just say you should read it yourself. Maybe it will make you start writing letters!

1. The picture says it all....Mickey Mouse....don't we all love this mouse? You can't help but smile when you hang out with the mouse!

2. Mom...she's the best friend that will always be there no matter what. I love my MOM!

3. Mother-in-law...yikes...did I say that? Yes, I did. I have a wonderful Mother-in-law. Her name is Jewell Pritchett and she's as good as GOLD.

4. Milk...it does a body good! I love Milk! I drink skim milk. I buy 2 gallons about every 3 days. Yes, there are other people in my house who love it too! ( :

5. Macaroni...I love pasta! Jack says I could live on it. Yep, I could.

6. Malls...I love to go to a Mall! I don't have to be looking for anything in particular. I love to look and look. I can go home empty-handed and that's ok. I love to people watch too. Where else can you see so many hair colors and new fashion all at one place!?

7. Memories...I love the memories I have of family and friends. There are so many wonderful times etched in my heart!

8. M & M's...one of my favorite candies! I love plain or peanut! Just give me some now! Thanks Ethan for the peanut ones earlier today! I got into his Valentine bag from school!

9. Magazines...I love to read magazines as much as I do books! I have subscriptions to several. And I just ordered more through the school. I got 3 requests in the mail. So what do we have coming this time? Redbook, National Geographic and Sports Illustrated...guess which ones belong to who?!

10. Movies...I love to watch movies when I have time...at the theater or on Lifetime or the Hallmark Channel.

Bad DAY?

I've told you about my bff who forwards mail to me everyday. Well, she sent this today and it is share worthy because I have talked to several people lately who have had a bad day--had a couple myself. Most of us bounce right back. . . but read this!

Things Got Ya Down? Well Then, Consider These . . .

In a hospital's Intensive Care Unit, patients always died in the same bed, on Sunday morning, at about 11:00 am, regardless of their medical condition. This puzzled the doctors and some even thought it had something to do with the super natural. No one could solve the mystery as to why the deaths occurred around 11:00 AM Sunday, so a worldwide team of experts was assembled to investigate the cause of the incidents. The next Sunday morning, a few minutes before 11:00 AM all of the doctors and nurses nervously waited outside the ward to see for themselves what the terrible phenomenon was all about. Some were holding wooden crosses, prayer books, and other holy objects to ward off the evil spirits. Just when the clock struck 11:00, Pookie Johnson, the part-time Sunday sweeper, entered the ward and unplugged the life support system so he could use the vacuum cleaner.

Intending to jolt him away from the deadly current, she whacked him with a handy plank of wood, breaking his arm in two places. Up to that moment, he had been happily listening to his Walkman.

Two animal rights defenders were protesting the cruelty of sending pigs to a slaughterhouse in Bonn , Germany . Suddenly, all two thousand pigs broke loose and escaped through a broken fence, stampeding madly. The two helpless protesters were trampled to death.

Safety Concerns

Melissa C. recently sent this e-mail to me. I thought it needed sharing because I am sure all of us have a cell phone and if you are like me you have a GPS in your car. Mine is not out in sight when not in use, but reading this changed my mind about programming it for home!

GPS
A couple of weeks ago a friend told me that someone she knew had their car broken into while they were at a football match. Their car was parked on the green which was adjacent to the football stadium and specially allotted to football fans. Things stolen from the car included a garage door remote control, some money and a GPS which had been prominently mounted on the dashboard.

When the victims got home, they found that their house had been ransacked and just about everything worth anything had been stolen.


The thieves had used the GPS to guide them to the house. They then used the garage remote control to open the garage door and gain entry to the house.

The thieves knew the owners were at the football game, they knew what time the game was scheduled to finish and so they knew how much time they had to clean up the house. It would appear that they had brought a truck to empty the house of its contents.

MOBILE PHONE

This lady has now changed her habit of how she lists her names on her mobile phone after her handbag was stolen. Her handbag, which contained her cell phone, credit card, wallet... etc... was stolen.

20 minutes later when she called her hubby, from a pay phone telling him what had happened, hubby says 'I received your text asking about our Pin number and I've replied a little while ago.'

When they rushed down to the bank, the bank staff told them all the money was already withdrawn. The thief had actually used the stolen cell phone to text 'hubby' in the contact list and got hold of the pin number. Within 20 minutes he had withdrawn all the money from their bank account.

Moral of the lesson:

Do not disclose the relationship between you and the people in your contact list. Avoid using names like Home, Honey, Hubby, Sweetheart, Dad, Mom, etc.... And very importantly, when sensitive info is being asked through texts, CONFIRM by calling back. Also, when you're being text by friends or family to meet them somewhere, be sure to call back to confirm that the message came from them. If you don't reach them, be very careful about going places to meet 'family and friends' who text you

The Letter J

Jelly-filled donuts--I love these but I can't have them too often because I'm diabetic.

July--this is my favorite month because my daughter and I were both born in this month.

Jeans--My favorite thing to wear but I have trouble getting into mine sometimes because of the jelly-filled donuts.

Jalapenos--I love hot and spicy food.

Job--I actually love my job (well most of the time). I feel blessed to work at a job that involves doing something that I enjoy enough to do for free (shhh...don't tell anyone I said that!)

Jefferson Airplane--at least that's what they were called in the 70's when I liked them

Jaguar--the type of car I will drive when I become rich someday!

Jamaica--the place I will visit someday when I become rich.

Je ne sais quoi--this is a French word that means "I do not know what." I think that pretty much describes me.

Joy--The emotion I experience everytime I see my grandchildren!

The Shack by Wm. Paul Young

Back at the end of November (seems like a long time ago) Miss Patti recommended a book with this post.
The name of the book is The Shack by Wm. Paul Young. Miss Patti and Faith had both read it and although they talked about liking it they never really told what it was about. Well, today I finished it. And here's what I think. You should stop what you are reading, lay it down now and rush to find a copy of The Shack. You might want to be sure you have some time because once you start it will be hard to stop until the last page. That would be number 248. I'm not going to give you any of the plot, I even recommend that you don't read the reviews or the summary on the back cover just begin with no expectations. Let me know what you think!

Books Going Fast

Run, don't walk to the book fair for those cookbooks because after Saturday's family day some of them are already gone. The Hershey's Cookbook has vanished-- some people somewhere are making great desserts!

Cookbooks @ the Book Fair

K-8 Moms if you love to cook the book fair has an entire table filled with cookbooks. Kim and I looked through some of them while we had lunch on Friday and they have some terrific looking dishes in them, especially desserts. I believe Kim went home with the Hershey cookbook and I have my eye on a couple of them!
